Some Small Projects

Just a quick recap of a few items from the workbench.  I have a couple of scenery items and a couple of Horrorclix zombies.  These have been staring at me from the workbench for a while, I was glad to finish them off finally.

First thing I did was build a Plast Craft Games building I got for Christmas.  It's from the EWAR 28 line.  It's listed as a grocery, part of the WW2 France building collection.  It is printed foamcore that basically snaps together, with some parts getting glued.  It built very quickly, I think I had it done in under 30 minutes!  It has a basic interior, and as a bonus, it comes with a destroyed version as well.  It's not spectacular, but it makes a nice building for the table.
Nice small package
It will work best as part of a wargame, like Bolt Action.  As it has a destroyed version, it fits nicely that wherever it is located on the table, if it is destroyed, you have that version ready to go.  Nice idea, and it works well enough.  I had hoped for a ground floor, but I can deal with it being a single large room on the ground.
Some of the parts
It comes flat packed and is very clean and very well printed.  I'd love to see some other buildings like this.  If I get a chance I'll look at getting a few more, they have some townhouses that would be good for urban filler.  I have left off the French sign for now.

In addition, I painted up a Dark Heaven Bones dumpster.  I'm happy with how it turned out.

I had a busted toy van I found last summer and it's been just sitting.  I finally based it and turned it into a wreck.
Toy car wreckage!
I love taking old and broken toys and making them scenery.  This car was busted up for me already, no wheels and a crushed top.  Some black and rust paint makes it a decent wreck.
This van has seen better days!
Finally I have two zombie cops from Horroclix.  I just did some painting, added some gore and based them on smaller bases.  The Horroclix line has some fun models, and they make for good additional zombies in the horde.  Too bad they are getting hard to find.
Two zombie cops
That's it for the update.  I'm hoping to get more productive, as well as figuring out how Dawn and company are going to handle their prisoners!

Scenery: Water Tower, Walls and a Supply Crate

This is a quick post of a few small items I managed to finish this week.  These are mostly recycled toys I found at a local resale shop.  These are meant to be scatter pieces, just to help fill out a table and add some interesting or useful bits.
Jack, Dawn and their car for scale
First is a tall piece, it's meant to be a water tower or similar.  Probably at a construction site or a farm or something.  It is a recycled Play-Doh dispenser, the base had some decent texture that came out with some paint.  I went for just a few colors, and lots of rust.
It's a tower...
Jack and Dawn check and see if there is any water...
Tower and weapons crate
I also have a Weapons Crate from Dark Heaven Bones.  It painted up very quickly, it's just a box after all.  I may get another couple of them and paint them in different colors for use as objective markers and such.  It's a bit large, but works well enough.

Jack is perplexed by the digital lock
That can hold a lot of weapons...
Finally, I have a couple of low walls.  These are hard plastic toys, no idea where they originally came from.  I picked them up with the tower, I love the second hand shop, the stuff is so cheap!
Some cover is better than no cover...
They should be useful on some tables
A bit of a slow week, but I was happy to get a few items off the work bench.  I love repurposing toys, these were easy to use - just some paint!

Zomtober Week 5

This week was slowed down by a water leak from an upstairs shower to a ground floor closet.  Quite a mess!  This slowed down my progress on my zombie horde...
Water and drywall do not mix!
I worked on two groups of toxic zombies from the Toxic Mall expansion for Zombicide. I added yellow/green highlights to designate them as 'toxic'.
Red group zombies
Yellow group zombies
I also repainted (mostly just retouching the existing scheme) a Horrorclix 'candystriper' which seemed to be a vampire type character of some sort.  I repainted the flesh to be less pale and red and more normal.  I added some additional red touches to her outfit and then based her on a plastic coin decorated with some craft paper to look like a tile floor.

Survivor and scenery

Finally I added a trash dumpster from Reaper Bones.  Great item for the urban landscape.  I left the lid unglued so it opens.
The lid propped open

This week all together now!
Week 5 all together!
Another Zomtober comes to a close.  It was pretty productive, although I didn't quiet hit my goal of finishing my Zombicide zombies off.  At least progress was made!

I really enjoyed everyone's entries, they were quite inspiring.  Besides the painting, the background stories and mix of survivors and zombies gives great ideas.  If you haven't already seen the other blogs, check out the links from my page - there are some very excellent Zomtober entries out there!

Zomtober Week 4

Another week!  This week it's time to take out the trash...  (You'll see what I mean!)

The prison figures from Zombicide have been completed.  These are groups yellow and pink, for the colors used on some highlights.
Squad Pink
Team Yellow

I also completed two abominations, one from the basic game and one from Prison Outbreak.  I am pretty happy with the red armored portions of the prison abomination, I like how it turned out.
ABOMINATIONS!  (Slipped into a 40K inquisitor voice there.)

Needing some food, I added a survivor.  This is a Dark Reaper Chronoscope figure, Jake Ryan, he is based on a Secret Weapons ruined street base.  I have him in a fairly plain outfit, I figure he may have been a police detective or something before the apocalypse.
Survivor Jake
Finally, I painted up some scatter terrain from Malifaux.  The set is Suburb Props, and is a set of various refuse containers and two sets of wooden crates.  They have fair detail and painted up pretty quickly.  To be fair, I had primed these some time ago, but finished them this week.
Scatter terrain
The whole week together, terrain and all was pretty productive.  More zombies than survivors by a wide margin, but at least I managed one more survivor.
More zombies for the horde!
One week to go for Zomtober!  It's been great seeing everyone's progress.  I can't wait to see where we finish!

Zomtober Week 2

This week I completed a few zombies and a few survivors.  The zombies are in two groups, Zombicide and the Zpocalypse minis.
Zombicide minis color blocked
Zpocalypse minis color blocked
A quick recap of the zombie painting plan - I just block in a few colors and then hit them with a 'dip' of red and black stain and a green/brown wash.  It's a mess, but it does the trick.  It does make painting zombies a bit easier.

Zpocalypse figs after the dip

These are easily the worst figures I have had the pleasure of painting.  They are not quite 28mm scale, closer to 25mm.  They will work as 'filler' zombies for the horde, but as individuals, they are bad.  The female zombies appear to have had their hair fall down around their shoulders, leaving them bald.  I'm just going to get paint on them and call them done.
First batch done
Two Zpocalypse figs and a Zombicide fig for reference
The Zombicide minis are from the Prison Outbreak expansion, season 2 I believe.  They are the typical good quality of Zombicide minis, much better than the messy Zpocalypse figs.  I am painting them in pretty typical prison colors, orange jumpsuits on the prisoners and white shirts over blue pants for the guards.
Survivors for a bonus!
As a bonus, I have three survivors finished as well.  Two are female survivors from Wargames Factory Survivors:Women box set.  I added some rather poor greenstuff to the RPG armed woman, adding in some sweatpants in place of shorts and shoes instead of flip-flops.  The other woman is armed with a bow and carrying an AK.  The third miniature is from Reaper Chronoscope, Candy, anime hero.  I have based her on a Secret Weapons ruined street base.
Group shot!

I have undercoated some more figs, hopefully next week is as productive!

The Burned!

More zombies!  Well, a few more anyway.  During Zomtober, I painted three "George" zombies from Dark Heaven Bones.  As I painted them, an idea occurred to me to make them look like they had been burned.  Mostly because they have just some rags on, and not much detail.  I had already painted them as 'normal' zombies, so I shelved the idea for the future.
A Walking Dead inspiration
I found another pack of "George" zombies, then I managed to find a second pack from the Bones line of zombies, with (in my opinion) a goofy hand waving pose.  They will work for what I want though.  Some quick advice for painting the Bones figs, make sure to wash them.  You should always prep figs with a quick wash anyway to get rid of mold release residue and such, but I figured I'd mention it.
"Zombie" being prepped
After primer, I did a basecoat of bright red on all the skin areas.  Then did dry brushing of various shades of red oxide and dark grey up to black.  After the black, I did a bit of white/grey just to bring out some detail.
Basic colors
I was pretty happy with the results.  The deeper red color came through the darker burn/ash colors, much like I had wanted.  The bright red shows up pretty well, and on the tabletop, you can actually see it.  Close up it doesn't look quite as nice, but good enough for play.  After I did the first zombie, I went ahead with the remaining figs.
Red Skin base
Red covered with grey/black
The rags the zombies are wearing are bit more difficult to paint up, I tried painting them as if they had burned, but it just looks too sloppy.  Instead, I picked some generic colors and just go with it.
Who wants candy?
Just shorts?
Overall the effect is pretty much what I wanted, I may go back and add some details to the bases, maybe some burned/melted details to reinforce the idea that these zombies had been hit with a flamethrower or just caught in a fire somewhere.
Shambling hand wavers
They could be drawing pistols...

Thanks for looking, comments always welcomed!
