They are LEGION

In July, I picked up a small new game…  Okay, not so small, but the base set isn’t too big - Star Wars Legion, from Fantasy Flight Games.  I was going to write a review shortly after I unboxed the game, but I wanted to live with it a bit before I wrote this.  To be honest, I want to give it more play time before a final judgement, but having played a few games in the last month or so, I thought this would be a decent time to give a first impression review.
FFG Rebels

Good:
1.       It does have a feel of Star Wars.  I felt like I had Darth Vader leading a charge into a rebel force.   I know West End Games had Star Wars miniature skirmish rules back in the (90’s?) and I dabbled with it as I played the RPG back in the day.  I have a fair amount of minis from the WOTC collectable game.  Both had a decent Star Wars feel, but Legion does a good job of keeping the action moving and not bogging down in details.
2.       The miniatures are detailed enough, certainly they match what you expect from FFG and Star Wars.  No confusing Stormtroopers and Snowtroopers – even with nearly all white on both models, they are visually different.  They have done a nice job making the models detailed; I have seen other places online comparing the airspeeder to the Bandai 1/48th scale fine model favorably.  The bit larger scale does help painting, especially as white and black (for Stormtroopers) is a major pain to make look good.
3.       The rules and game play is easy to pick up, you can play small skirmishes right out of the box, and build to larger battles pretty quickly.  As expected, the game components are all excellent; FFG has mastered the task of getting art and cards to be high quality.  It looks good, feels good, and isn’t overly complex.  I was able to teach a complete non-mini gamer to play the basics in less than 10 minutes.  Cards have enough rule notes to actually help instead of adding confusion.
FFG Stormtroopers

Bad:
1.       It is not as flexible of a game as I would have hoped.  Full disclosure, I have not purchased any expansions yet, but I have had the chance to play around with extra units.  The basic set is enough to play, but not enough to really play.  It was fun for a few plays, but you quickly find out you need more troops and want more toys to make it interesting.  Hey they need to make money somehow, and as a former 40K player, I understand how this works.  As much fun as it is, Darth Vader vs Luke Skywalker does get old, and pretty much everyone has at least one of each of them.  Including a second, minor commander in the base set to give some flexibility would have been nice.
2.       Gameplay is pretty easy to grasp, and there is a good amount of nuance (rock-paper-scissor-shotgun) but it seems to limit the games to smaller affairs for best effect.  The small skirmish game is the most common play style, and with a seeming focus on tournament play similar to X-wing coming through the stores, I can see why.  Aside from painting the miniatures, there is not much customizing (some game modifications from cards, but not creating a custom commander for example) so everyone should be able to play in a Legion event and not question what they are seeing.  Given time and expansions, the customizing will change, exactly as it has in X-wing, with hundreds of options for ship modifications, everyone can find a combo they like.
3.       On the subject of the miniatures, they are a bit larger scale than other games (heroic 40K) and they have nice detail, but they are a PVC based plastic.  That means you have to use a gorilla glue/superglue to put them together, not traditional hobby cement.  They also have a noticeable ‘bendiness’ as the PVC is pretty soft.  In general, this doesn’t cause any problems, but some of the detail is lost and they don’t look as nice under inspection.

FFG Luke and Vader face off

Other:
1.       Distance measurements are all from custom rulers and movement gages.  I’m not sure how I feel about this.  They work well enough, the shooting ruler is pretty sturdy (a sectioned triangular stick) but the movement templates may be a problem.  The movement gages have a rotation point in their middle, and need to be snapped together to work.  Mine went together okay, with one nearly breaking as it snapped together.  I have heard horror stories from other players whose gages broke during initial construction.  Decent idea, maybe better execution next time.
2.       Scenery is another area I am not sure how I feel.  There is already plenty out there and making scenery is something I enjoy and for Legion it is easy enough to make.  The barricades that come with the game are good for getting started, but a few ‘tournament’ type players who don’t consider any custom terrain ‘legal’ does sour the experience a bit.  It’s easy enough to avoid those folks, but long term I see where X-wing has gone, and I wonder if Legion will go down the same road where tournament play is the focus of the overall game.
3.       Game play is okay, but most of the battles seemed to come down to a lot of ‘fighting in a closet’ to me.  I know some of that is my limited selection of troops.  Plenty of games suffer from a focus on hero units, and Legion is no exception – if Vader crashes into the rebel line with Luke not able to counter him, the results are just what you expect.  It’s just too many games came down to this effect.  I am sure I am to blame for a portion of this, it’s partly how I play, but other players mentioned this effect as well.
4.       Another game play observation – playing Legion feels more like a ‘game’ compared to other miniature wargames.  Moving units around leaders, not every individual is a great idea - it speeds up the game considerably.  Custom dice, I am not a huge fan of.  They are fine; it makes sense for how the game is setup to compare hits, surges, defense, etc.  The old curmudgeon in me wants to see normal dice and +/- modifiers and make us do math.  Just how the game works makes it feel like a ‘game’ and less like a miniature representation of a battle.  That is likely my own personal feeling and may change with more play.
5.       Not a bad thing, maybe, but I feel it is a missed opportunity or possibly corporate influence – there are only two sides, Rebel or Imperial.  This is how X-wing started and after about 2 years (maybe less) they added Scum and Villainy for the bounty hunters and such.  I see Boba Fett is coming out for the Empire, and I think about how long until Legion has the same thing happen.  May be plan ahead a bit for another faction, or maybe even add some sort of sub-factions to the mix, just to make it a bit more varied.

Conclusion:
In the end, I have to say I have enjoyed playing Legion.  That alone makes it a good game - after all if you have fun playing a game, it has done what it was designed to do.  From a hobbyist point of view, I am not quite as sold.  The models are not cheap, but they don’t feel quite as good of a value compared to some other miniatures.  Not that you couldn’t give your Stormtroopers some custom poses, or head and arm swaps on rebel troopers and such, but it is a bit more difficult with the minis the way they are.
If you are looking for a fun, quick playing Star Wars themed miniature game, Legion is a pretty good effort.  It plays well, looks nice and isn’t too complex for newer gamers and has enough to it for more veteran gamers.  In a few years we will probably have so many expansions it will feel like the epic war it represents.
For now, I may try some more games, but it's not going to be the focus it was for me for the past couple of months.  Back to the zombie apocalypse!

Paradise!

Sorry for the delay, but my wife and I took a trip for our 10 year anniversary, and went to Hawaii.  We arrived on the big island, but stayed most of our trip on Oahu.  I figured I would share a few pictures and let people know why things have stopped for the past few weeks.
Sunset at Waikiki
As you would expect from a trip to Hawaii, it was wonderful.  We went snorkeling with sea turtles, which was the first time my wife had been snorkeling.  We had a nice cruise around Diamond Head the rest of the day and then wandered Waikiki.
The picture does not do it justice
Diamond Head from the Waikiki gazebo
We spent several days on Oahu, and visited Pearl Harbor as well as the North Shore and wandered the island.  It was great weather and we had a great time.
Arizona Memorial with USS Theodore Roosevelt (I think) in the background

Statue of King Kamehameha
Hula Pie at Duke's on Waikiki - thumbs up!
So, it was a cool trip.  It did, however throw everything into chaos for the past month.  I'm planning on getting some gaming posts going again soon.

Stay safe everyone and Aloha!

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!
Well, we made it to 2018.  What a rough second half 2017 gave me.  I apologize for being gone for so long, but my family needed to come first and the time I have to give cut into hobby time.  Things have settled back down, and with the holidays ending, I am able to get back to gaming.
Such a present!

I'll be posting regularly again starting this week.  I'm going to try and ease back into it, with some reviews of the various games I just got for gifts.  I'll continue my campaign in the coming weeks as I have time to write up the battle reports.

To everyone who sent me notes of support, I appreciate it.  I tried to respond to everyone, but I am certain I missed a few people.  The zombie apocalypse gaming community is amazingly strong, I have been shocked at the amount of support and concern I have heard from people.

Thank you everyone.

What Happened?

Boom.
Sorry for dropping out of sight.  I wanted to post something long before now, but I have just not had any chance to do so.  I wish I could say this was where I would be able to start posting regularly again, but I don't know when I will be back.

My family is facing a problem.  My father in law has been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer, and we are working to spend as much time supporting him and my mother in law for as long as he can fight this.  I know it's a downer, but I need to spend my time in the real world, not in gaming for now.

I am hoping to be back for Zomtober.  It all depends on what my family needs.

Once I have moved past this, I will be back to gaming.  Until then I will be on hiatus.  I thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers.  Seeing a loved one dying is a difficult (to say the least) situation but I look forward to the distraction that is the zombie apocalypse.

Father's Day Zombies!

It's Father's Day in the US, so I'd like to send a happy Father's Day to all the fathers out there.  I hope you had a great day!

I had my two nephews visit this weekend.  They are 2 and 6, and now I realize why I am glad my kids are 21 and 23!  Not much for gaming, but I did get a couple of great zombie themed games to try out.
High hopes!

First is The Walking Dead: All Out War.  I have not played it, but have seen it played in a few places and it certainly looks cool.  I'm looking forward to at least painting the minis and adding them to my ATZ games.
Has potential...

Second is called Zombie Island.  I have never heard of this game, my wife found it at a game store that specializes in out of print games and accessories.  I haven't had a chance to unbox it yet, but I plan on breaking it out and posting a game recap.  It sounds like fun, you are an "explorer" making your way through a jungle infested with zombies.  That is what I have gotten from a quick read of the box...

It was a busy and tiring weekend.  Hopefully Fear the Walking Dead tonight doesn't disappoint!

I've got a Ticket to Ride...

Okay, this is embarrassing.  It's been a month of life just conspiring against me.  I apologize for the lack of updates, but between an illness, holiday, work trip and new game I just plain didn't have any time left for zombie gaming.
Not my work, but a cool zombie apocalypse train!

On a gaming note, my sister introduced me to the board game Ticket to Ride.  I know it's been around for years, but I hadn't tried it.  Trains just are not a huge draw for me.  I played Empire Builder way back in the day and couldn't get into it.  Ticket to Ride is a much more social or beer and pretzels game, and it has been a go-to for the wife and I for the past month or so.
Ticket to Ride USA board
The game is basically collecting cards to turn in sets and 'build' rail lines.  You can focus on making the longest sets possible or building specific routes and connecting cities to fulfill various 'tickets' to score points for routes.  I am pretty impressed with the game mechanics, it allows for different strategies as well as ways to score and win from seemingly poor starts.
Example game play

No zombies, but there is some sort of expansion with a large monster (Godzilla) and space alien.  Not sure what that is about, but the game has solid mechanics and I could see it adapted to many milieus.  Who knows, maybe there will be a Walking Dead version...  (hmm, they did have rail lines to Terminus...)
Map expansion maybe?

It is a fun strategy board game, and there are plenty of expansions and options to keep it fresh.  We have the basic game, set in the USA as well as the Ticket to Ride:Europe set.  It gives us a geography lesson when we play as well!

I have waited to post again until I felt I could commit to a few posts and get back into regular posting.  Once I get back to the apocalypse, we will see what happened to Dawn after the gang attack!

Going Rogue! (No Spoilers)

Happy Holidays to everyone, I hope you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.  It's been a crazy couple of months, and I have been slacking on the hobby front.  I've got a batrep to write up plus some minor projects to share.  I am hoping to get some time once all the family matters are done!

As the title suggests, I did manage to see Rogue One.  A pretty good war film, though I expected it to be more action filled starting off.  I was glad I watched A New Hope just before seeing Rogue One.  Lots of tie-ins, some minor, some pretty big.  I enjoyed the movie, I'd like to see more Star Wars movies along the same vein as this one.

After seeing the movie, I may be taking a short foray into Star Wars gaming.  I have X-wing and have played a little bit.  I know there are plenty of players in the area, I just have to find a league that is at the right time for me.  Curse you real life!

As I said, I'm well behind what I wanted to be doing, but I am working to get back to regular posting.

Stay safe and Happy Holidays!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Here in the US it's Thanksgiving and I would like to pass a Happy Thanksgiving to everyone dropping by.  I hope you have a great day, even if you don't celebrate the holiday.

I've had a change in my job which has changed my hours and responsibilities.  This has limited my time recently.  I hope to get back to regular posting this week.

Gobble Gobble
It's not my picture (Found at Zombie Art by Rob Sacchetto) but seems appropriate.  At least it's not a Walking Dead spoiler...

Anyway, thanks for dropping by and see you soon!

Zomtober Week 5

This week was slowed down by a water leak from an upstairs shower to a ground floor closet.  Quite a mess!  This slowed down my progress on my zombie horde...
Water and drywall do not mix!
I worked on two groups of toxic zombies from the Toxic Mall expansion for Zombicide. I added yellow/green highlights to designate them as 'toxic'.
Red group zombies
Yellow group zombies
I also repainted (mostly just retouching the existing scheme) a Horrorclix 'candystriper' which seemed to be a vampire type character of some sort.  I repainted the flesh to be less pale and red and more normal.  I added some additional red touches to her outfit and then based her on a plastic coin decorated with some craft paper to look like a tile floor.

Survivor and scenery

Finally I added a trash dumpster from Reaper Bones.  Great item for the urban landscape.  I left the lid unglued so it opens.
The lid propped open

This week all together now!
Week 5 all together!
Another Zomtober comes to a close.  It was pretty productive, although I didn't quiet hit my goal of finishing my Zombicide zombies off.  At least progress was made!

I really enjoyed everyone's entries, they were quite inspiring.  Besides the painting, the background stories and mix of survivors and zombies gives great ideas.  If you haven't already seen the other blogs, check out the links from my page - there are some very excellent Zomtober entries out there!

Zomtober Week 4

Another week!  This week it's time to take out the trash...  (You'll see what I mean!)

The prison figures from Zombicide have been completed.  These are groups yellow and pink, for the colors used on some highlights.
Squad Pink
Team Yellow

I also completed two abominations, one from the basic game and one from Prison Outbreak.  I am pretty happy with the red armored portions of the prison abomination, I like how it turned out.
ABOMINATIONS!  (Slipped into a 40K inquisitor voice there.)

Needing some food, I added a survivor.  This is a Dark Reaper Chronoscope figure, Jake Ryan, he is based on a Secret Weapons ruined street base.  I have him in a fairly plain outfit, I figure he may have been a police detective or something before the apocalypse.
Survivor Jake
Finally, I painted up some scatter terrain from Malifaux.  The set is Suburb Props, and is a set of various refuse containers and two sets of wooden crates.  They have fair detail and painted up pretty quickly.  To be fair, I had primed these some time ago, but finished them this week.
Scatter terrain
The whole week together, terrain and all was pretty productive.  More zombies than survivors by a wide margin, but at least I managed one more survivor.
More zombies for the horde!
One week to go for Zomtober!  It's been great seeing everyone's progress.  I can't wait to see where we finish!

I have a created a monster...

...Well, a pocket monster.
Well, they're zombies...

The wife and I have been playing Pokemon GO, along with a sizable portion of the rest of the world, I know.  This has taken quite a bit from my hobby and game time, and I have been lacking any real progress.  My plan is to get the search for Eric up soon, if work will cooperate a bit this week.

At least Fear the Walking Dead is back!  Hopefully it will give me more inspiration to get back to ATZ.

Until then, gotta catch 'em all!
I don't choose you...

Fun in the Desert

Sorry for the lack of updates, but I just got back from an extended vacation in the southwest USA.  My wife and I flew to Las Vegas and drove to visit my brother's family (we met our new niece!) in Sacramento, CA.  We stopped by Death Valley as well as Lake Tahoe.  I took a few pictures, some of which I figured might be interesting...

McCarran Airport Welcomes us to Las Vegas...

North of Las Vegas we passed to the west of a military base.  For being so secret, everyone seems to know about it!
Just over those hills is Area 51...
Apparently there's aliens around?
Being Nevada, of course there's a brothel attached!
Entering Death Valley, we stopped a couple places to get some pics.  It was about 1PM and 113 degrees F (about 45 degrees C) outside.  Nice and cool!

We stopped at a ghost town just outside Death Valley as well.  It's called Rhyolite, and can be found on google maps, if you are curious.  I found the ruins interesting, I kept expecting some sort of apocalyptic survivors to emerge from the shadows!
Abandoned caboose
Great weathering on the inside!
Most of the town was just partial ruins.  Still cool and inspiring for scenery.

This used to be the bank
There were several cool buildings in ruins.  A couple felt a bit more creepy...

Graffiti in the small room.

Another day, and Lake Tahoe.  It was pretty, less inspiration for gaming, but good looking.
Landslide!

After a few days in Sacramento we headed back to Vegas.  Our trip took us near Edwards Air Force base, including an aircraft boneyard.  Still it was mostly desert...

Miles of this.  Sand and Cactus.
Aircraft boneyard, pretty far off.
A solar power setup.  Pretty cool to see.
We finished up back in Vegas.  The strip is pretty crazy, and goes from family fun to adults only.
From off the strip - pretty cool view
It was a fun trip, but tiring.  I'm glad to be home.  I'm planning a return to gaming once I've rested a bit.
